Shark Bites are the latest fantasy football news & NFL updates. Draft Sharks has been in business since 1999. And when we started, redraft was the dominant form of fantasy football. Check out what we've learned about this most basic form of fantasy football along the way.
Chicago has been hit with heavy rains this morning. It looks like the worst of it will be gone by kickoff of 49ers-Bears, but there will be lingering showers -- and a wet field. The forecast also calls for 15-20 mph winds. Less than ideal scoring conditions, although this looked like a low-scoring game anyways. Expect lots of running from both teams.
49ers TE George Kittle (groin) is officially inactive for today’s opener vs. the Bears. He suffered what’s been reported as a Grade 2 groin strain on Monday and didn’t practice the rest of the week. We’ll see if Kittle can make it back for Week 2. His absence is a significant loss for QB Trey Lance but frees up targets for WRs Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.
The 49ers remain "fully behind" QB Trey Lance, despite the decision to retain QB Jimmy Garoppolo, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Rapoport adds that the team simply couldn't pass up the opportunity to keep Garoppolo as a quality backup for just $6.5 million -- and that a midseason trade is still possible.
49ers TE George Kittle (groin) is "not likely" to play vs. the Bears today, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Kittle didn't practice after injuring his groin on Monday. "Pushing it early doesn't make sense," Rapoport tweets. We'll see if Kittle can make it back for Week 2. His absence is a significant loss for QB Trey Lance but frees up targets for WRs Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.
The 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo are finalizing a new deal that will make him the "highest paid backup in the NFL," according to NFL Network. It's a surprising move after the 'Niners basically said all offseason that Garoppolo had no future with the team. San Francisco has committed to QB Trey Lance as the starter -- but Garoppolo's presence will make it easier to bench Lance if he struggles this year. We're not moving Lance in the QB rankings, but his fantasy floor is now a little low.
Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Garoppolo is getting $6.5 million guaranteed with "playtime bonuses that can boost it another nearly $9 million." So it's a backup-level deal with upside in case Garoppolo ends up playing more than expected.
Niners QB Trey Lance and HC Kyle Shanahan each acknowledged that the preseason finale proved disappointing. "Some ugly stuff out there, for sure," Lance said, per 49ers Webzone. Shanahan said he had hoped for a "cleaner" outing and that he extended Lance's playing time by 1 series because of how quickly the first 2 possessions passed. Each also downplayed the importance, of course, of a single, 3-drive appearance. We're certainly not altering our outlook for Lance, who's upside is primarily driven by his rushing ability. Consider the game a reminder, though, that San Francisco's new starter might mix in a few rough outings this year.
If there was any remaining doubt as to who will be the 49ers' starting QB this season, HC Kyle Shanahan put that to rest on Tuesday. "We have moved on to Trey Lance," Shanahan said. "This is Trey's team." QB Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the roster as he recovers from shoulder surgery, but the 'Niners are hoping to trade Garoppolo "as soon as we can," Shanahan added. Lance remains mostly an unknown as a passer. But he's in a favorable scheme with strong weapons. Throw in his high-end rushing upside and he's an attractive target at his QB13 ADP.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that 49ers (still) QB Jimmy Garoppolo recently had a checkup with Dr. Neal ElAttrache and is "progressing well." Rapport added that the Niners are "thrilled with where he is physically." Garoppolo has reportedly been throwing for about 4 weeks and is expected to gain full clearance to return from his right-shoulder injury in mid-August. We'll see whether this is enough to jumpstart the QB's trade market.
NFL Network's Peter Schrager is hearing from 49ers players that QB Trey Lance has been "awesome this offseason." Reports on Lance's progress were lukewarm at best early this offseason, but it sounds like he's building momentum. "Everything I'm hearing out of the Bay Area is that there has been major strides heading into year number two. Jimmy [Garoppolo]'s not there, and he's kind of been off the radar. Trey Lance is [there]. I'm getting more and more of a feeling this is Trey Lance's team, and he's ready to go." With elite rushing ability and a strong group of pass-catchers in Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle, Lance carries a lofty fantasy ceiling in 2022.
Niners TE George Kittle said this week that QB Trey Lance appears to be taking over the offense. “I definitely think he’s taken ownership, for sure,” Kittle said, via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. “You can kind of tell that in meetings, he’ll talk. He’s assuming responsibility. … He’s letting his personality show a little bit. And he’s going to be out there slinging the rock around.” Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the San Francisco roster, but we'll be surprised if Lance isn't the Week 1 starter. The current uncertainty is keeping Lance outside the top 12 at QB in best-ball drafting.
Matt Barrows of The Athletic describes the “blockers in front of [Trey] Lance” as “question marks.” The real issue is along the interior, where nobody’s locked into a starting spot. Of note: C Alex Mack, 36, is questionable to return for another season. And reliable RG Laken Tomlinson signed with the Jets in free agency. The 49ers used a mid-round pick on UTSA OT/OG Spencer Burford, but he’s unlikely to make a year 1 impact. Lance remains a fringe QB1 with a wide range of outcomes.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler hears that the 49ers are still planning to start QB Trey Lance this season. QB Jimmy Garoppolo remains of the roster as of now, at least in part because he's still recovering from shoulder surgery. "I'm told that [Lance has] gotten indications, at least informal indications from the team, that he'll be the guy next year. He's set to be that," Fowler said. "Now, whether that means that they would still keep Garoppolo and that could change the dynamic, possibly. But right now, Lance is going to be the starter." We're comfortable drafting as if Lance will be under center for San Francisco this year. And his ADP has actually sunk to QB13 recently, making him a nice value.
49ers QB Trey Lance "was probably further behind than people realized," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. "Trey Lance is greener than people realize, Trey Lance is going to need more work than people realize." Schefter added that QB Jimmy Garoppolo is not a lock to get traded this offseason. "Garoppolo unquestionably is one of the most popular and respected players in your locker room. Players love playing with him. You have him under contract this year at a very friendly $25 million cap number. And if you play with him this year and you lose him after this year, you're going to get a third-round compensatory pick back in return. So are you better playing this season with Jimmy while getting Trey the training he still needs, or are you better trading Garoppolo for a two, a four and a six? What's the better alternative?" We're still expecting Garoppolo to be dealt this offseason and for Lance to be San Francisco's 2022 starter. But this is a reminder that that's not guaranteed -- and that there will likely be ups and downs for Lance if he does take over.
NFL insider Albert Breer writes that the 49ers “feel good about where they are with [Trey] Lance and are poised to hand him the reins.” Lance proved to be predictably raw in his limited 2021 action. But the 49ers' staff felt like he was “ascending” late in the season, per Breer. If Lance can even assemble a league-average passing performance, he'll carry top-10 fantasy upside into year 2. Note that he rushed 24 times for 120 yards in 2 starts. While Jimmy Garoppolo is currently under contract for 2022, San Francisco can cut or trade him with minimal cap repercussions.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that there's a "strong lean" toward the 49ers starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo in Sunday's game against the Rams. We'll certainly watch to confirm that, but fantasy managers who were hoping to start Trey Lance need to make alternate plans.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb) is expected to play vs. the Rams on Sunday, according to insider Matt Maiocco. It sounds like Maiocco is basing that off the fact that San Francisco did not elevate QB Nate Sudfeld from the practice squad, rather than information from a source. Still, fantasy owners should now be operating under the assumption that it'll be Garoppolo under center. He'd be a risky fantasy start playing through an injury to his throwing thumb.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb) is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game vs. the Rams. He got in 3 limited practices this week. "He had a good week,” HC Kyle Shanahan said Friday. “Feel good with where he's at right now.” Shanahan added that he’s already decided who will start at QB but wouldn’t reveal. We’ll look for an update on this situation on Sunday morning.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb) was officially limited in Wednesday's practice. He admitted that the thumb was sore after throwing on Tuesday and that it still hurts to throw. That doesn't sound like a guy who's likely to play vs. the Rams this weekend, but we'll continue to keep a close eye on Garoppolo's progress.
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday's win over the Texans that QB Jimmy Garoppolo will start next weekend's regular-season finale if his thumb is back to 100%. But he also admitted that it'll be tough for Garoppolo to get to 100% by next Sunday. So it sure sounds like QB Trey Lance is the favorite to start vs. the Rams. The rookie disappointed with just 31 scoreless rushing yards today but delivered with 249 yards and 2 TDs passing.
