Skattebo opened his college career at Sacramento State, an FCS program.
He showed potential in 2021 with 6 TDs on 57 attempts and a stunning 9.1 yards per carry.
Skattebo’s production exploded in 2022:
- 196 carries
- 1,369 yards
- 7 TDs
His advanced numbers proved impressive, too.
Among 133 RBs with 150+ carries, Skattebo ranked 21st in yards after contact per attempt and seventh in PFF’s elusive rating.
Thirty-one catches arrived in the passing game, at a strong 1.70 yards per route run.
Would he take another step forward in 2023?
‘I Was Getting a Little Complacent’
Skattebo gave a frank assessment of his mindset after the 2022 breakout.
"[Sacramento State] Coach Taylor did a good job of being able to find me and understanding what talent level I was at,” Skattebo said via CBS.
“He used me in ways I couldn't even have imagined. When I go back to it, he gave me a chance at a level he knew I could play at. I was getting a little complacent being there, understanding that I was a star. I knew I could be at a higher level. Being part of a success story and not a failure story is always going to be a blessing.”
Skattebo entered the transfer portal and joined new Arizona State HC Kenny Dillingham.
But the chemistry took time to develop…
Skattebo Doesn't Find Instant Success at ASU
Here’s our lead college analyst, Shane Hallam, on Skattebo’s 2023:
“I think the adjustment to Dillingham's system was a tougher ask in the first year … the OL wasn't really built for it. Combine that with tougher competition, and the running game just wasn't able to operate well.”
Skattebo still held a clear lead role. But his YPC, YAC per attempt, and missed tackles forced per attempt wound up at career lows.
Soon, though, we’d witness a monumental final season…
‘This Cam Has the Potential to Play on Sundays’
Dillingham observed a mindset shift from his RB, which resulted in reduced his body fat and increased speed metrics in training camp.
Here’s the HC calling his shot in August:
“He’s a different person mentally in terms of how focused he is and how driven he is this year. That’s a guy, he had a great year last year but he didn’t even — I mean, he’s a different player. This Cam has the potential to play on Sundays. Last year’s Cam did not. That’s how drastic of a change he made, his decision he wanted to achieve being a Sunday player.”
Good to Great: A Legendary Senior Season
Skattebo’s numbers certainly reflected a Sunday player.
He ranked:
- Second in the country in rushing yards
- Second in rush attempts
- Tied for fifth in rushing TDs
An elite 4.09 YAC per attempt and 140.3 elusive rating further highlight his special season.
Plus, he delivered three-down value with 44 catches – another top-10 mark.
So the numbers aren’t debatable. But will Skattebo’s distinct style translate to the NFL?

Games watched: Texas (2024), Arizona (2024), BYU (2024), Oklahoma State (2024), USC (2023)
Professional Tackle Breaker
It takes little time to notice the obvious theme in Skattebo’s game:
The man breaks tackles like a pro.
In fact, he broke the second most tackles in the nation last season, per PFF. His rate of 2.85 carries per forced missed tackle also ranked top 5.

Skattebo ran wild in the game above vs. Texas. He carried 30 times for 143 yards and two scores, giving him 140+ yards in each of his final four outings.
Le'Veon Bell-like Patience
Patience is another Skattebo staple. We see some of it in the explosive run vs. Texas, and the next clip supplies another example ...

One of the Top Pass Catching RBs in this Class
Skattebo's value extends to the passing game, where he racked up 69 catches at ASU. Below, he's aligned as a WR and shows soft hands on the quick in-breaker.
Per PFF, Skattebo posted a career drop rate of only 4.3%. For his career, he totaled 127 slot snaps; 111 out wide.

Finally, consider Skattebo’s work as a pass protector. PFF charted zero sacks and only six hits in 231 career pass blocking reps.

Ultimately, he should hold some third down value in the NFL.
Cam Skattebo Team Fit: Chicago Bears
The Bears have already upgraded the O-line with guards Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson, and center Drew Dalman.
Now, expect new HC Ben Johnson to add backfield talent alongside D’Andre Swift. Skattebo would provide a David Montgomery-like talent that Johnson effectively deployed in Detroit.
Also note: Swift’s contract makes him unlikely to stick in Chicago beyond 2025.
Dynasty Value Conclusion: Draft A LOT of Cam Skattebo
Skattebo’s size, production, and film signal a potential NFL starter.
He didn’t do much at the NFL combine, but his broad jump (10’3) and vertical (39.5 inches) stand well ahead of historical RB averages.
So, what’s the drawback? Skattebo isn’t a burner, meaning he’ll need to continue relying on breaking tackles for chunk gains.
Some might see that as a drawback, but the tape shows such elite balance and strength that his skills should translate to Sundays.
Skattebo could factor into an NFL offense by the end of 2025 -- particularly if Day 2 draft capital materializes.
He slots sixth in our dynasty rookie RB rankings.
