College Career:
As a 4-star recruit out of Wichita, Kansas, Hall garnered 16 FBS offers, turning down schools such as Michigan, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Missouri to find more immediate opportunity at Iowa State.
Cyclones coaches still played Hall sparingly over his 1st 4 games with the team. But then he spent the 5th showing them what a mistake that was. Hall racked up a 26-132-3 rushing line in that win at West Virginia and then spent the rest of the season as the feature back.
Hall improved on that as a sophomore. He opened the year with 8 straight games of more than 100 yards – 7 of those over 130 – and wound up leading all of FBS with 1,572 rushing yards. He became Iowa State’s 1st-ever unanimous All-American and earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Despite a slight dip in carries and yardage, Hall repeated as conference player of the year and All-America selection in 2021. He posted 7 more games of 100+ yards, including 3 of 190+. Hall’s final outing produced 242 yards and 4 total TDs in a win over TCU.
By finding the end zone in every game over his final 2 campaigns, Hall set an NCAA record of 24 straight contests with a TD. He opted out of the team’s bowl game and is skipping his senior season to enter the draft.
Film Study:
Games watched: Oklahoma 2020, Oklahoma State 2020, Baylor 2021, TCU 2021, Iowa 2021
I’ll be honest: I watched the 2 games from Hall’s sophomore season and didn’t really get it. Not that I had a negative opinion; I just came away surprised that Hall was the consensus lead back. (And yes, of course I realized that was a very small sample.)
I watch some RBs every year, but I’m far from a true film scout and figured I was missing something with Hall. So when Matt Waldman’s YouTube breakdown came up, I checked it out. And as Matt tends to do, he opened my eyes to what was there.
Hall’s speed is terrific (96th percentile among RBs), and his size is basically ideal for the position. His college numbers look strong. But what makes Hall stand out is a bit more subtle.
To put it simply: He’s slick, he’s cunning and he’s prescient.
Hall’s near-immediate cut in that clip turns what probably should have been a loss into a solid gain.
Want a flashier example that generated bigger yardage?
That run against Baylor in 2021 features the kind of head-wiggle and tight-area cuts that I was underrating at first. It also shows Hall’s ability to quickly assess what’s in front of him and find the best path.
Here’s another example of his quicks and vision from last season’s Iowa game, after he took a direct snap …
The long speed displayed in his 40 time will certainly come in handy when Hall gets into the open field. But it’s the quick burst and arsenal of moves that really create yardage.
That arsenal also includes strength through contact.
Hall won’t be mistaken for Derrick Henry, but he’s also not a runner likely to get yanked near the goal line. And he should find himself immediately involved in the passing game.
You can see the receiving numbers above, and Hall’s target share grew in each of his Iowa State seasons (to a solid 9.9% in 2021).
My 5-game sample didn’t show much beyond the typical short-range RB receptions, but Hall looked smooth in that role. And Iowa State sure seemed to treat him like a go-to receiver on this play late in a comeback against Baylor, when the Cyclones desperately needed a TD.
Fantasy Potential:
There’s not a whole lot missing from Hall’s profile. The production is there. He dominated backfield work. He contributes in all areas. And now the measurables match up.
All we’re waiting on is the draft capital, and it sure seems like Hall is speeding toward being the 1st RB off the board in April. Assuming that comes to fruition, you should plan on him being the 1st RB in your dynasty rookie drafts.
And if you’re already a Hall fan, then you might want to jump into some early best-ball drafts to get him. He’s going:
– 22nd among RBs (early Round 6) on Underdog
– RB21 (mid-Round 5) on Drafters
– RB19 (early Round 4) in BestBall10s
– RB19 (late Round 4) in NFFC
All of those will almost certainly rise once he has an NFL team.
Interestingly, Hall is going 12th among RBs and early in Round 3 in FFPC best-ball drafting so far.
