Omarion Hampton's Dynasty Value looks poised to rise in the NFL

QUICK LINKS:

Size and production are two cornerstones of a high-end RB prospect.

At 220 pounds – and with 4,200 career yards – Hampton boasts a strong foundation. In fact, the 22-year-old profiles as one of the top power backs in a loaded class.

But what else does he have to offer? And can he eventually supply RB1 fantasy totals?

Let’s dive in…

High Expectations From a Young Age

A four-star recruit, Hampton fielded offers from more than a dozen schools.

Among them:

  • Penn State
  • North Carolina
  • LSU
  • Auburn
  • Wisconsin
  • Ohio State

Ultimately, Hampton made UNC his home for the next three years.

Promising Start

As a freshman, Hampton posted 100+ rushing yards in two of his first three games.

Overall, he played a No. 2 role behind third-year RB Elijah Green -- although the backfield would shift come 2023.

That year, Green missed time due to injury and transferred out of UNC.

Hampton took full advantage of an offense piloted by QB Drake Maye. The 220-pounder ranked fifth in the nation with 1,504 rushing yards, adding 15 TDs. He averaged a strong 4.22 yards after contact per attempt.

His 2023 was even more impressive when you consider UNC’s run blocking grade: 100th nationally, per PFF.

Now, could Hampton reach another level as a junior?

Veteran HC Makes Bold Claim

Ahead of the 2024 season, HC Mack Brown praised Hampton and shed light on his commitment to UNC.

“He is one of the best players in the country, and we've had some great running backs here and in Texas,” Brown said via Infinity Sports Network

“He's as good as any of them. I mean, he's big, he's strong, he runs a 4.4, he's 220, he has tremendous hands, he's very unselfish. He's a guy with our modern day transfer portal had the opportunities to go a lot of different places for a lot of money, and he's very unselfish. He decided to stay here because he knows we have a chance to run the ball well.”

Note: At Texas, Brown coached excellent backs such as Ricky Williams and Jamaal Charles.

Let’s see if Hampton made his HC look foolish – or like a genius …

NFL Future Cemented

I won’t bury the lede; Hampton’s 2024 proved terrific

He matched his 2023 yards per carry (5.9) and rushing TDs (15). But Hampton took on more work, with his carries per game jumping from 19.4 to 23.4.

The RB’s game remained anchored in physicality. Per PFF, he gained the second-most rush yards after contact in the country (1,222).

He also set a career high in catches (38), receiving yards (373), and receiving TDs (3).

Next, let’s see that power in action – and then determine where else he can excel in the pros.

Omarion Hampton Highlights

Games watched: Minnesota (2023), Georgia Tech (2023), Duke (2024), West Virginia (2024), Georgia Tech (2024), Florida State (2024)

On tape, Hampton looks every bit of his listed weight (220).

In the first clip, we get a look at his strength through contact, as he breaks the tackle of 6’6, 325-pound DL Zeek Biggers. Biggers, a likely Day 3 pick this spring, contacts Hampton 2 yards into the backfield. But the RB maintains his balance and scores from 17 yards out.

Omarion Hampton Dynasty Value's is boosted by broken tackle ability

While Hampton’s known for power, there’s still plenty of burst to his game.

In fact, he tied for fourth in the country in runs of 15+ yards in 2024. I see some Derrick Henry-like buildup speed when given a runway.

Omarion Hampton's Dynasty Value is on the rise because of his explosive buildup speed

On this next run, Hampton picks up a nice gain behind the pulling TE.

The right side seems to open up, but as usual, he chooses to get north-south right away. View that as a positive, as Hampton looks less dynamic when cutting laterally.

Omarion Hampton Dynasty Value's is boosted by his north-south running.

As a pass catcher, Hampton primarily saw simple usage on screens and swing passes. For his career, he saw only 27 slot snaps and 15 out wide, according to PFF.

This final clip shows his ability on an angle route, as he dusts the coverage LB en route to another bulldozing gain.

Omarion Hampton should be able to add fantasy value with his pass catching ability.

Since his superpower is forcing missed tackles, you could see a creative NFL offense designing ways to target Hampton in space.

Omarion Hampton Team Fit: Chicago Bears

I know. D’Andre Swift remains a Bear. For now.

With the Lions in 2022, he played under new OC Ben Johnson but averaged only 7 carries and 3.4 catches per game. (Jamaal Williams led the backfield with 262 carries.)

In 2024, Swift underwhelmed as a first-year Bear. Among 46 RBs with 100+ carries, he ranked:

  • 39th in yards per carry
  • 39th in PFF rushing grade
  • 42nd in elusive rating
  • and 44th in yards after contact per attempt

Hampton would give the Bears a David Montgomery-like power threat – with the ability to contribute as a receiver as well.

Swift's contract seems to make him unlikely to leave this offseason. But I'll bet against Swift making it to the end of his three-year deal.

Hampton also brings experience in Johnson's style of running game, which includes zone and gap runs.

Dynasty Value Conclusion

Hampton’s résumé includes two years of impressive lead-back work. That stretch turned up nearly 3,800 total yards and 33 TDs (601 touches).

Aside from a broken ankle (spring 2021), Hampton has enjoyed a clean medical history.

That combo of productivity and durability project favorably to the NFL, where he should excel as a power rusher. We’ll see if his pro team supports a passing-game role. But the college tape suggests he’ll at least be a functional target with post-catch ability.

Hampton looks like a Round 2 lock heading into the Combine -- and the No. 2 RB in the class behind Ashton Jeanty.

That would give the UNC star a shot at RB1-level workloads within his first couple of seasons.
