QUICK LINKS:
Tyler Warren sat behind Pat Freiermuth, Brenton Strange, and Theo Johnson at Penn State.
When he was finally allowed to start in 2024, Warren became a jack-of-all-trades weapon, leading the Nittany Lions with 104 catches for 1,233 yards and eight TDs.
He also ran the ball 26 times for 218 yards and four scores.
Similar to the rookie success of Brock Bowers, Warren could make an instant impact with his athleticism as an offensive weapon.
But is Warren’s late breakout a red flag for his potential fantasy value in 2025 and beyond?

Three Sport Athlete
Warren attended Atlee High School in Mechanicsville, Virginia where he lettered in basketball, baseball, and football.
As the best athlete on a smaller school football team, Warren was the starting QB as a junior and senior.
His dual-threat abilities were on display, throwing for 2,025 yards and 23 TDs while rushing for 1,231 yards and 17 TDs over his final two seasons.
He was recruited as both a FB and TE, committing to Virginia Tech initially. However, as he gained more interest nationally, he reconsidered and signed up to play at Penn State.
Slow Start
Warren took a redshirt year in 2020, while Pat Freiermuth led the Nittany Lions TEs in receiving.
In both 2021 and 2022, Warren was behind Brenton Strange and Theo Johnson, playing sparingly.
He was used as a red zone threat in heavy packages, catching four TDs over those two years.
Warren flashed enough to earn more playing time heading into his junior season in 2023.
Role Expands
Penn State utilized Warren creatively in 2023, lining him up in the backfield, out wide, in the slot, and in-line. While Johnson played a more traditional starting TE role, Warren began to show his potential as the season went on.
The lack of talent in Penn State's WR corps resulted in Johnson and Warren tying for second on the team with 34 receptions each. They also tied for the team lead with seven receiving TDs.
Johnson moved on to the NFL, and Warren decided to stay for another year as the team's primary receiving threat.
Swiss Army Knife
In 2024, his unique role went to another level. Warren compiled:
- 104 receptions
- 26 rushes
- 6 Passes
He scored 13 total TDs and led the team in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving TDs.
In addition to being the top offensive weapon on the Nittany Lions, Warren was key as a blocker in the run game. He often sealed the edge for long outside runs, especially in the College Football Playoffs.
This elite production from the TE position is rare in college and has made Warren a potential top-10 NFL Draft option.
Tyler Warren Highlights
Games watched: Mississippi (2023), Kent State (2024), USC (2024), Ohio State (2024), Maryland (2024), Oregon (2024), SMU (2024), Boise State (2024), Notre Dame (2024)
There is a reason why Warren is getting top-10 NFL Draft buzz. His ability as a complete weapon makes him attractive to NFL teams, despite his late breakout.
Let’s dig into the film…
Contested Catch Skills
Most TEs will need to be successful catching contested timing passes when going up against a Safety or CB. Warren consistently showed the ability to manipulate defenders into the position he wanted them, allowing him to box out as needed.
Against zone coverage, he rarely even uses this skillset as he has such a knack for settling into soft spots.
But in man-to-man, Warren dominates with a 61.9% contested catch rate in 2024.

Warren uses his physicality on this back shoulder catch against one of the best slot CBs in the nation. Teams struggled to identify the right way to cover Warren in man-to-man, and this type of concentration and focus is why.
Warren Keeps Breaking Tackles
Recent top TEs like George Kittle and Travis Kelce separated themselves by being able to break tackles after the catch. Whether it be through power or short area quickness, this trait can be the difference between a good fantasy TE and an elite one.
Warren has the upside to be an elite TE with his ability to break tackles. He had 30 broken tackles in 2024, top five among FBS TEs.

In the College Football Playoffs, Warren showcased this ability against Notre Dame both with his contact balance through arm tackles as well as using power to pick up a few extra yards.
Doing all of this on a Mid TE screen also gives NFL teams a great idea of how to use Warren’s skillset at the next level.
Warren as a RB?
Speaking of ways to use Warren’s skillset in the NFL, his power and athleticism makes him a trick-play fiend.
Penn State’s willingness to give him carries or even let him throw a pass here and there shows just how important he was to the offense.
Opposing defenses were often caught by surprise by Warren’s speed and acceleration, taking poor angles to tackle him and underestimating his burst and speed.

Warren takes the Wildcat snap and fakes a potential pass before taking off outside, surprising the Buckeye defense.
He reads the defense and moves outside looking for a potential seal block.
Pulling off this type of “trick play” against the top defense in the country was impressive.
Warren also could be a potential Tush Push candidate for whichever team drafts him. He had a few short yardage runs, like this one against USC, that went for a first down.

Warren’s Lack of Separation
The one potential weakness for Warren is that he leans more into physicality than getting separation. He certainly is athletic, but appears to feel more comfortable boxing out in man-to-man instead of getting separation.
He also had a 15% drop rate in 2023, struggling to secure any pass not directly in his hands. That was cleaned up with only a 2.8% drop rate in 2024.
![Tyler Warren misses a high pass with little separation](https://i.makeagif.com/media/2-10-2025/-iBT-6.gif)
In the play above, Warren does a block and release with the OLB staying disciplined and waiting for the route. Warren isn’t able to accelerate and separate, leading to a high pass from his QB.
It would have been a difficult catch, but one that likely becomes more of a lay-up if the window was bigger.
If Warren can’t get better separation as a pro, it likely means he won’t hit his fantasy ceiling.
Tyler Warren Team Fit: New Orleans Saints
New Saints HC Kellen Moore puts his TEs in position to utilize their talents. This past season as OC for the Eagles, Dallas Goedert’s snaps were as follows:
- 51.7% In-Line
- 35.3% Slot
- 8.9% Wide
- 4.1% Backfield
Moore utilized Goedert to create mismatches with him or use him to lure away key defenders from the focus of the play.
Warren would thrive being used in a similar way. Let him move around the formation and create easy targets when the defense doesn’t adjust.
Saints fans are used to Taysom Hill’s flexibility, so Warren would be a younger, better version of Hill in many ways.
It also doesn’t hurt that the Saints are hurting for weapons and Warren could see Brock Bowers level of targets as a rookie.
Dynasty Value Conclusion
Warren going in the top-15 of the NFL Draft makes him an instant top-five dynasty TE if the situation is right.
If Warren gets enough targets, he has the versatility to put up TE1 numbers instantly.
The film is outstanding and his testing should be very solid (if he tests).
The only warts on Warren's profile are his late breakout and the chance that his blocking is so good he doesn’t run enough routes.
Don’t hesitate to invest a first-round rookie pick in Warren.
