Chargers RB Gus Edwards is sidelined with an undisclosed injury but is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, HC Jim Harbaugh said on Thursday.
"It's been great with Gus," Harbaugh said. "He's an incredible worker. Incremental gains, that's what we're after. He's been on a really good track. Can't wait to see when he's fully back to 100% capability."
When asked whether Edwards will be ready for the start of training camp: “That’s likely. That’s the likely high possibility.”
We'll keep a close eye on Edwards when Chargers camp gets rolling in late July. For now, it doesn't sound like this injury will impact his 2024 season.
Edwards is part of what feels like a wide-open Chargers backfield alongside J.K. Dobbins and rookie Kimani Vidal. There should be plenty of fantasy value to be found in the backfield under Harbaugh and OC Greg Roman. All four of Harbaugh and Roman's 49ers teams ranked top nine in both rush attempts and rush rate.
With Edwards out and J.K. Dobbins working back from his torn Achilles, Vidal presumably got lots of run this spring. The sixth-round rookie has a real opportunity to claim a significant role this season -- perhaps even lead the Chargers in carries.
We're not adjusting any Chargers in the RB rankings on this news.
Edwards had a healthy, 17-game season last year. But he missed the entire 2021 campaign with a torn ACL and also missed all of his 2015 season at Miami with a foot injury. It's unclear if this latest injury is related to either of those ailments.
