Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy took the field with teammates for the first practice of training camp Wednesday. That was in question after the first-round pick missed some spring workouts because of a hamstring injury.
Worthy after practice Wednesday: "It felt good just to be back out here with the guys and being able to play football again. I'm as good as I can be right now. Obviously, still working my way back into things. But I'm here. I'm ready to work."
Patrick Mahomes on Tuesday, when asked whether the team is easing the rookie in: "There's no easing. He's going to have to be ready to go. We got a lot of competition on this offense. He got a lot of mental work in these last few weeks that he had during OTAs and minicamp, but it's time to go now. ... We’re going to push you to the limit and prepare yourself to be ready to go for the season."
The Chiefs' WR corps will bear watching throughout summer.
Worthy obviously brings exciting upside given his strong college production and high-level speed. He'll compete for target share, though, with Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice among WRs -- with TE Travis Kelce obviously ticketed for his usual large role.
Worthy's downfield ability -- plus Mahomes' passing -- gives the rookie potential to produce efficiently even on fewer targets. He makes for an attractive later-round shot to take.
That Worthy was able to start camp on time is a great sign. We'll watch for any hamstring setbacks.
A healthy Worthy can only help Mahomes' fantasy outlook. The QB lacked strong downfield options in 2024, but K.C. has looked to flip that this year by nabbing Worthy and Brown.
Look for a big rebound from Mahomes' career-low 7.0 yards per pass attempt in 2023.
This will be a key situation to watch for ADP movement.
Worthy and Brown both climbed in best ball ADP through the spring in the wake of Rice's off-field issues.
There's obviously potential for plenty more movement as we await potential league discipline for Rice and get more camp reports on the whole group.
