Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy will underdog knee surgery after complaining about knee soreness. After an MRI, it was revealed that he has a torn meniscus in his right knee. The amount of time he will miss is currently unknown, but we will update when more information is available.
Adam Schefter from ESPN: "Vikings rookie first-round pick J.J. McCarthy is expected to be undergo knee surgery that will determine how much time he will be sidelined. McCarthy complained about knee soreness over the weekend, and underwent an MRI on Monday night."
Vikings HC Kevin O'Connell: "As far as the timeline of the injury, that will be something determined during the procedure" whether it's a cleanup or full repair.
McCarthy had a solid preseason debut throwing for 188 yards, two TDs and an interception. He appeared to be progressing well in his play and there was potential for him to start early.
McCarthy was in a QB competition to be the Vikings starter for Week 1 with QB Sam Darnold. It appeared that Darnold would win the job, but the leash was expected to be short.
Knee surgery puts all of this in flux as McCarthy is likely to be sidelined at least for the rest of the preseason, if not longer. His ability to compete for the starting job is likely gone with a focus on recovery instead.
