The Colts on Tuesday waived RB Evan Hull. That means any team who wants him would have to go through the waiver process. It also leaves only Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson behind Jonathan Taylor on the regular-season roster.
Paul Bretl of Colts Wire: "The backup running back competition was one of the more intriguing competitions this summer–but it never truly turned into a battle, with Trey Sermon securing that role quickly and not letting go."
Nate Atkins of the Indianapolis Star (on Aug. 22): "A consistently nice preseason for Tyler Goodson. Gotta think the Colts will keep him and Evan Hull on the roster with Trey Sermon banged up. Goodson has looked like the better runner of the two."
That the team kept Goodson and not Hull obviously says the Colts agree with Atkins' assessment.
It also likely tells us the team isn't too worried about Sermon's hamstring issue.
He'll enter the season as the primary backup to Taylor, though Goodson might take more receiving work if Taylor went down.
Neither has done much in the NFL to date. Goodson caught 70 passes (and carried 533 times) across three seasons at Iowa, though. Sermon has 6 receptions across three NFL seasons and totaled 48 across four years in college.
This doesn't look like a situation to target a single handcuff. I'd bet on a split backfield with far less effectiveness if Taylor gets hurt.
You don't need to dump Hull just yet if you've been holding him in dynasty. But it'll be OK to do so if he doesn't catch on with a team ahead of Week 1. (And perhaps even if he does.)
Ashton Jeanty sits atop our April 2025 dynasty rookie mock draft. Which players join him in Round 1, though? And who else should you target?
