James Cook Retains Clear Lead Back Role

Bills RB James Cook saw the team add Round 4 RB Ray Davis over the spring. By all accounts, the rookie enjoyed a strong summer. But as expected, the third-year RB remained the backfield leader against Arizona. Cook handled 19 of 24 team RB attempts. He also caught all 3 of his targets for 32 yards -- enough for a decent 13% target share.

2024 Fantasy Football Impact

Cook failed to find the end zone, something he did only twice on the ground in 2022 and 2023. On Sunday, Cook garnered 3 red zone carries and 2 inside the 10 yard-line. But it was Josh Allen who popped in a pair of short-range scores.

That’ll remain a theme to watch moving forward. Still, fantasy owners should come away from Week 1 encouraged by the overall usage. Ray Davis mixed in for only 3 carries and 1 target, with veteran Ty Johnson managing only 3 total touches.

DFS Impact

Cook's lack of big-time TD upside makes him more of a cash-game play for the foreseeable future.

Next up is a Dolphins defense that allowed 117 yards on 24 carries from Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby. Buffalo travels to Miami on Thursday night. Cook posted 6.7 and 14.2 half-PPR points against the Fins in 2023.
