According to multiple reports, the Saints are now set to officially hire Kellen Moore as their next HC. The move has been expected since before the Super Bowl. At 36, Moore will become the league's youngest HC, edging Seattle's Mike Macdonald (37 until late June). Moore, of course, spent 2024 as Eagles OC after one season as Chargers OC and four as Cowboys OC.
What They're Saying
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero: "The Saints informed the other finalists -- Darren Rizzi, Mike Kafka, and Anthony Weaver -- on Jan. 31 that they were going to wait and speak again with Kellen Moore after the Super Bowl, making clear he was the top choice."
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
Moore has showed a willingness to fit his offensive approach to the personnel.
Three of his first five offenses ranked among the league's top six in pass attempts. His only Dallas offense that didn't finish top 10 in that category came in 2022, when the Cowboys lost QB Dak Prescott to a thumb injury for five games.
This past season's Eagles, however, passed less than any other team in the league while leading the NFL in rushing attempts. Philly also ranked near the bottom of the league in pass rate vs. expectation.
Moore now moves from one of the league's most talented rosters to one much closer to league bottom. Worse yet, the Saints sport the NFL's worst 2025 cap situation.
According to Spotrac, New Orleans sits $51 million over the estimated cap for the coming season. That'll make it difficult to alter the QB situation or add significant pass-catching talent.
Expect Incumbents to Lead Limited Offense
Derek Carr has remained efficient on shorter-range passing. That included:
- ranking sixth in adjusted completion rate in 2024
- ranking fourth in completion rate over expected
He's fine, though an unexciting fantasy prospect.
The Saints should get WRs Chris Olave (concussion) and Rashid Shaheed (meniscus) back from injuries.
They also extended RB Alvin Kamara during the season and retain RB Kendre Miller.
TE/utility man Taysom Hill remains under (an absurdly large?) contract through 2025 as well. But his Dec. 1 ACL tear figures to challenge his readiness for the season.
We'll see what else New Orleans can add via the draft or free agency.
Dynasty Impact
The greater long-term fantasy impact in New Orleans will likely come from the Saints potentially cleaning up their cap situation and improving at QB -- more so than Moore's impact.
His OC history to date suggests that the new coach could help the production of New Orleans' top offensive guys. But don't go projecting any significant boosts right now.
Other Winners & Losers
Perhaps Moore's departure leaves some negative impact on Philly's offense, but don't bet on noticing it.
The Eagles ranked the exact same seventh in scoring and eighth in total yards the year before Moore arrived as they did this past season.
Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith all remain under contract through at least 2026.
