RB Nick Chubb is expected to sign with the Texans on Monday, pending a meeting and physical with the team, according to both NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Fowler: "Texans considered leader among several teams. Saints and Browns also have been involved to some degree. Chubb plans to sign as soon as Monday. Going to a contender important to him."
Chubb's still a big name, but he's 29 and played just 10 total games over the past two seasons thanks to a pair of lower-body injuries.
First came the nasty knee injury that ended his 2023 in the second game. Chubb didn't return until Week 7 of last year and then averaged a lowly 3.3 yards per rush before breaking his left foot in Week 14.
Chubb would join a Houston backfield led by Joe Mixon but with opportunity behind him.
The Texans moved up to draft RB Woody Marks in Round 4 this April, but he played more impressively as a pass catcher than runner in college. That could make him and Chubb potentially complementary players should Mixon go down.
Other competition includes Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale.
If Chubb signs and drafters start taking Mixon any later, take advantage.
We'll see what kind of contract he gets, but this version of Chubb is more depth player than threat to the starter.
