Dolphins GM Chris Grier told reporters Wednesday that RB De'Von Achane will be ready for the regular-season opener. NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe recently revealed that Achance has been missing practice time with a calf injury, after the team called it merely a "lower-body" issue.
Grier: "All indications are Achane will be ready Week 1."
We'll certainly need to watch for any potential setbacks with Achane's calf issue in practice between now and the Sept. 7 opener. And Achane will bear watching through his first game action. But we have to assume for now that he'll be ready.
Achane's Week 1 workload could get a boost from the expected absence of No. 2 RB Jaylen Wright. We're still not betting on workhorse-level touches for the diminutive starter, but Wright's absence can't hurt Achane's playing time.
Achane has remained in the range of the Round 1-2 turn for PPR drafts in our rankings, despite the calf setback. His situation obviously still elevates the risk a bit vs. if Achane were fully healthy. But the upside makes him worth the shot early in Round 2.
Rookie Ollie Gordon's expected to run second to Achane for as long as Wright's out. Gordon (225 pounds) stands much bigger than Achane and Wright but trails well behind the duo on speed.
