Bottom Line

You’re not drafting Achane expecting 2023-level efficiency.

But is there some room for him to jump up to ~15 touches per game?

After adding weight this offseason – our answer is yes.

It’ll come down to health for Achane, who’ll need to prove his new frame can hold up. He ultimately profiles as a volatile RB1.

What We Learned Last Year

  • Achane became one of the best picks in 2023 fantasy drafts.
    • Across 11 appearances, he finished as a top-8 PPR back five times.
  • He posted unbelievable efficiency marks.
    • Among 50 RBs with 100+ carries, the rookie ranked first in yards per carry (7.77), first in EPA per rush (0.32), and T-first in yards after contact per attempt (3.29).
    • He scored 11 total TDs, with two coming from 65+ yards out.
    • Achane broke 10 tackles on 31 receptions, scoring 3 times. He lined up all over the formation, helping him average a huge 9.5 yards after catch per reception.
  • That efficiency was key, as Achane generally played a 1B role alongside Raheem Mostert.
    • Mostert handled 13.9 carries per game; 10.2 for Achane.
  • Better health would have led to an even bigger season.
    • Achane made his NFL debut in Week 2 due to an August shoulder sprain.
    • Come Week 5, he sustained a knee injury that forced an IR stint.
    • Returning in Week 11, Achane banged the same knee and missed one more game. (Miami played on a short week, which likely played a role.)
    • Achane dealt with toe and rib injuries moving forward.

What to Expect in 2024

  • The Dolphins used a Round 4 pick on speed back Jaylen Wright.
    • He’s likely to slot in as the RB3. The rookie isn’t expected to impact Achane right away.
  • Raheem Mostert returns for his age-32 season.
    • Despite the advanced age, Mostert’s missed only three games over the past two seasons.
    • He signed a contract extension in March and will remain a major part of the backfield rotation.
  • HC Mike McDaniel commented on Achane adding muscle this offseason.
    • Said McDaniel: “[I’m] seeing some strength gains and you can tell by his body he’s put some work into it…[he’s] just understanding everything about our offense so he can be as big a part of it as possible. That’s his goal.”
  • Miami’s offense retains key pieces around Achane in QB Tua Tagovailoa and WRs Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
  • The O-line will demand attention, especially after losing stud G Robert Hunt.
    • Note: Miami ranked 8th in run block win rate last year.

Tua Tagovailoa, QB MIA

Tua Tagovailoa Meeting With Neurologists This Week

Dolphins QB Tua Tagaovailoa will meet with neurologists this week after sustaining another concussion in Thursday night's loss to the Bills, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. "Tagovailoa will be seeking their input into the severity of his latest concussion and the cumulative effect of the ones he has suffered in the past to make the most informed decision about his future," Schefter writes. Tagovailoa contemplated retiring after suffering multiple concussions in 2022, so we have to believe that's on his mind now. At a minimum, he's likely looking at a multi-game absence. The Dolphins will turn to QB Skylar Thompson at least for Week 3. We'll see what they add to the position. Free-agent QB Ryan Tannehill seems like the easiest short-term fix.

Dolphins RB De'Von Achane entered Thursday night's game vs. the Bills as questionable with an ankle injury. You wouldn't have known it watching the game. Achane was as explosive as ever -- and handled a big workload. He carried 22 times for 96 yards (4.4 YPC) and caught all seven of his targets for 69 yards and a score. The TD came from five yards out in the first quarter on a well-designed play. Achane ran a swing pattern to QB Tua Tagovailoa's right and had FB Alec Ingold swing out in front of him to block. Achane surprisingly remained in the game deep into the fourth quarter -- after Tagovailoa had exited with his concussion and WRs Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle had been pulled. It was a curious decision from HC Mike McDaniel, but Achane seemingly came out of the game without suffering a setback.

Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel didn't even want to talk about a potential timetable for return for QB Tua Tagovailoa after his latest concussion. "The furthest thing from my mind is what is the timeline," McDaniel said after the loss to the Bills. "We just need to evaluate and just worry about my teammate, like the rest of the guys are. We will get more information tomorrow and take it day by day from there." Tagovailoa was able to walk off the field under his own power, has movement in all extremities, and was "in good spirits" afterward, McDaniel said.

After being limited in practice all week with a Questionable tag, Dolphins RB De'Von Achane is active and starting tonight's game. With RB Raheem Mostert out for the game, RBs Jeffery Wilson and Jaylen Wright (both are also active) will also be included, but Achane should lead the way with no restrictions.

Raheem Mostert led Miami's backfield in 2023. But Achane's 11 total TDs and nearly 1,000 total yards showed his potential in a high-octane, Mike McDaniel offense. Mostert is under contract for 2024, but Achane is here to stay as an impactful fantasy asset. Just note: With rookie speedster Jaylen Wright now in the mix, Achane's volatility figures to stick around.
