Bowers Bred to be Stellar Athlete?

It's pretty easy to understand where Bowers' physical prowess comes from once you learn more about his family ...

  • DeAnna Bowers (mother): former All-America softball pitcher at Utah State, inducted into school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
  • Warren Bowers (father): former All-Big West center for Utah State football team.
  • Brianna Bowers (sister): played softball at Sacramento State 2019-22.

Brock Bowers became a four-star recruit (TE3 in the country) in the 2021 class from Napa High School in California, where he played basketball as well.

Immediate Success at Georgia

Bowers chose Georgia over 19 other schools and didn't wait long to make an impact.

The young playmaker led the Bulldogs with 56 receptions, 882 yards, and a school single-season record 13 receiving TDs in 2021. His receiving TD total ranked second in the SEC and sixth in the NCAA.

Bowers earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors, as well as spots on the All-SEC first team and All-America second team.

Bowers Made History in Just Three Years

In 2022, Bowers again led the team with:

  • 63 catches
  • 943 yards
  • 7 TDs

He earned first-team All-SEC and All-America honors -- as well as the John Mackey Award (nation's top tight end).

Even Surgery Can't Stop Him

Bowers endured his first setback in 2023: a left high-ankle sprain vs. Vanderbilt in mid-October required tightrope surgery. That cost Bowers nearly a month and four of Georgia's 14 games.

The TE still led the team in catches (56), receiving yards (717), and TDs (6) for a third straight season. Bowers also became the first two-time Mackey Award winner.

Across three seasons in school, Bowers never finished any lower than third in PFF receiving grade, yards per route run, or receiving yards among TEs with at least 50 targets.

Centerpiece of Great Teams

It's also worth mentioning that Georgia won national championships in each of Bowers' first two seasons.

Between those two title games, Bowers recorded:

  • 12 catches
  • 205 receiving yards
  • 1 receiving TD

Georgia also deployed Bowers often as a runner.

He recorded 19 carries for 193 yards and 5 TDs for his career. That's rare usage for a TE.

So what can dynasty managers expect from the budding hotshot?

Bowers a Versatile Weapon

In-line, out of the slot, and at times even out wide or from the backfield.

Bowers delivers an impact presence from any spot in the formation.

The first play here shows Bowers running from the slot to secure a catch vs. TCU:

Brock Bowers catches a long pass across the middle vs. TCU. His ability to work downfield vaults his dynasty value.

Here, Bowers takes a short pass from in-line toward the sidelines, requiring several defenders to tackle him vs. South Carolina:

And in this clip, we see Bowers run in motion to take a long route near the sidelines for a significant gain vs. Auburn:

Brock Bowers comes down with a long reception vs. Auburn out of motion. His scheme versatility should keep him on the field, helping his dynasty value.

Bowers' game speaks for itself.

He pops off the screen when the ball is in his hands. Bowers is a tremendously well-rounded athlete with an aggressive, high-motor play style.

That mirrors 49ers TE George Kittle.

It's also pretty cool to watch him work as a runner out of the backfield and on touch passes.

Any team would be lucky to have Bowers as a red zone weapon. Below are a pair of plays in which he receives a touch pass and a straight carry as a runner out of the backfield with great success:

sBrock Bowers scores a rushing TD on a quick end-around vs. UT-Martin. His rushing work displays his fantasy football upside.

Tough to Find Faults in Bowers

Although it clearly didn't limit him in college, Bowers' size will be worth watching as a potential NFL factor.

According to Mockdraftable, he rates just 23rd percentile in height for the position among Combine TEs since 1999; 12th percentile in weight.

Still, Bowers proved to be at least an adequate blocker in my video sample. That separates him from Kyle Pitts as prospects. Bowers isn't just a "big WR."

Will He Play Full Time?

Bowers' blocking obviously won't impact your fantasy team. But it'll matter for how much he can stay on the field.

In the past, Bowers' lack of size vs. the position prototype might be enough to limit his playing time. But we need only look back at the last two draft classes for positive comps.

Trey McBride (2022), Sam LaPorta (2023), and Dalton Kincaid (2023) all sport very similar size. All got drafted within the first two rounds. And all have already made significant impacts.

Bowers appears likely to get drafted earlier than any of those three.

Brock Bowers Team Fit: Las Vegas Raiders

Vegas is far from an ideal landing spot for Bowers.

The Raiders just spent the 35th overall pick of last year's draft on TE Michael Mayer, although that pick was made by a different front office. Mayer was a strong prospect and had a fine rookie season. But we're not worried about him blocking Bowers.

We see two bigger concerns for Bowers' shorter-term fantasy value:

  1. Davante Adams, who's been one of the biggest target hogs in NFL history. He's signed with Vegas through the 2026 season.
  2. A shaky QB room currently comprised of Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell.

Those two issues figure to curtail Bowers' 2024 production. But this is a prime example of not overrating short-term situation in dynasty. Adams won't be around forever, and the Raiders could have their QB problem solved by next year.

Raiders Fire HC Antonio Pierce

Raiders Fire HC Antonio Pierce

The Raiders fired HC Antonio Pierce. He gave Vegas a spark after taking over midway through last season, going 5-4 over the final nine games. But Pierce flamed out in 2024, winning just four games. The Raiders ranked bottom six in points and total yards, with WR Jakobi Meyers and TE Brock Bowers the only reliable fantasy assets. We'll see who the Raiders tab to replace Pierce -- and what they do at QB. They hold the sixth overall pick of this spring's draft.

Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell (knee) put in a full week of practice and is off the final injury report for Sunday’s game vs. the Jaguars. He’s just a low-end QB2 in fantasy lineups, but O’Connell’s return is good news for WR Jakobi Meyers and TE Brock Bowers.

Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice. That puts him on track to return for this weekend's game vs. the Jaguars. Considering QB Desmond Ridder's performance on Monday night (59% completion rate and 5.3 yards per attempt), this is good news for TE Brock Bowers and WR Jakobi Meyers.

Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left knee, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It's a relatively minor injury, and O'Connell hasn't even been ruled out for next Monday night's game vs. the Falcons, per Rapoport. We'll track his status throughout this week. QB Desmond Ridder will start against Atlanta if O'Connell can't. It's a situation to steer clear of, even in superflex leagues. TE Brock Bowers and WR Jakobi Meyers' outlooks won't change much based on the QB.

Raiders TE Brock Bowers went off for 10 catches, 140 yards, and 1 score in Friday's loss to Kansas City. He tallied a game-high 14 targets.
