Bills secondary set to change significantly

Bills secondary set to change significantly

The Bills are releasing S Jordan Poyer and CB Tre'Davious White. The Poyer release means Buffalo must replace both starting safeties. Micah Hyde is also a free agent and reportedly considering retirement. White struggled with injuries over the past three seasons, most recently tearing an Achilles' tendon at the beginning of October. We'll be surprised if White lands more than a supporting role anywhere in 2024 -- and perhaps beyond. We'll see how the Bills address safety this offseason. Damar Hamlin is the only safety currently under contract. The NFL's Comeback Player of the Year played just 17 defensive snaps in 2023 and likely isn't an answer for 2024.

The Bills believe CB Tre'Davious White tore his right Achilles' tendon in Sunday's win over the Dolphins. That would obviously end White's season. It could also challenge his longer-term future. White tore his left ACL in November 2021, missing the rest of that season and the first 10 of the following year. He'll turn 29 in January, with two years left on his contract. But the final two seasons hold shrinking dead-money numbers if the Bills release him. White entered Sunday as Buffalo's highest-graded CB in coverage, according to Pro Football Focus. He ranked 22nd in that category among all 160 corners so far this season. He'll obviously be a big loss for Buffalo's defense, though we wouldn't go targeting the matchup just yet. The Bills ranked second in pass-defense DVOA last year despite playing most of the year without White and losing both starting safeties for multiple games.

The Bills have ruled LB Tremaine Edmunds (groin, heel) and EDGE Greg Rousseau (ankle) out for Sunday's game against the Browns. CB Tre'Davious White (ACL recovery) is also not yet ready to make his season debut. S Jordan Poyer (elbow) is questionable. He finished the week with a full Friday practice, which seems to point to him playing. We'll confirm Poyer's status Sunday morning.
