Bottom Line

Cook made a sizable jump from year one to year two. His rushing yards increased by 615; his catches rose by 23.

The lead back role remains his for 2024. But a lack of TD upside leaves him best viewed as a fantasy RB2.

What We Learned Last Year

  • After a quiet rookie year, Cook morphed into a fantasy asset in 2023.
  • His 1,567 total yards ranked third among RBs. His 44 catches ranked just outside the top 15.
  • Cook never appeared on the final injury report en route to playing all 17 games.
  • Cook ranked as the PPR RB11; RB19 in points per game.
    • He finished RB12 or better six times. He recorded two games between RB13 and RB24.
  • He ranked fifth among all ball carriers in rushing success rate at 55.7%.
  • Cook sat tied for eighth in rush yards over expected per attempt.
  • He largely ran into favorable fronts, with only 10.1% of his carries coming against 8+ man boxes.
    • That ranked fourth-lowest among 49 qualifiers.
  • Buffalo cut ties with OC Ken Dorsey ahead of Week 11. Here are Cook’s splits with Dorsey and fill-in OC Joe Brady:
    • From Week 1 to Week 10 with Dorsey, Cook averaged 12 carries and 2.8 targets per game. His opportunity share: 14.8%
    • From Week 11 on with Brady, Cook averaged 7 carries and 3.9 targets per game. His opportunity share: 20.4%
  • Cook’s main issue was a lack of goal line touches.
    • Josh Allen handled 14 carries inside the five-yard line, limiting Cook to 4.
    • Allen also topped his teammate in carries inside the ten (21 to 18).
  • The Florida State product has now totaled only four rushing scores on 326 career carries.

What to Expect in 2024

  • Expect Cook to remain the clear lead back in 2024.
  • Buffalo moved on from ‘23 backups Latavius Murray, Leonard Fournette, and Damien Harris.
  • Offseason additions include rookies Ray Davis and Frank Gore Jr.
    • Ray Davis arrived in late Round 4. He brings a needed power element to the backfield.
    • Gore signed as a UDFA. Despite a productive college career, he’s an unlikely fantasy factor.
  • Buffalo’s O-line lost only C Mitch Morse. We might see competition in camp, but no significant offseason additions were made.
  • Josh Allen returns for year seven. His red zone rushing will likely remain a roadblock to Cook approaching double-digit TDs.
  • Only 25 (in September), Cook is squarely in his prime.
    • He enters year three with only 326 career carries.

James Cook, RB BUF

Hat Trick For James Cook In Week 2

Bills RB James Cook scored all three of the team's offensive TDs in Thursday night's win over the Dolphins. The first came in the first quarter on a well-designed misdirection that left Cook wide open in the left flat. He caught a short pass and burst to the pylon for a 17-yard score. Cook hit paydirt on a one-yard plunge in the second quarter and then scored from 49 yards out later in the second to give the Bills a 24-7 lead. He found a nice hole off the right guard and then out-ran former teammate Jordan Poyer's angle to the end zone.

Bills RB James Cook saw the team add Round 4 RB Ray Davis over the spring. By all accounts, the rookie enjoyed a strong summer. But as expected, the third-year RB remained the backfield leader against Arizona. Cook handled 19 of 24 team RB attempts. He also caught all 3 of his targets for 32 yards -- enough for a decent 13% target share.

The Bills selected Kentucky RB Ray Davis in Round 4 of the NFL Draft. A three-star recruit out of San Francisco, Davis opted to play at Temple over Navy and Kent State. He made a true-freshman impact for the Owls with 193-936-8. Then, after a pandemic-shortened 2020, Davis transferred to Vanderbilt. A toe injury that required surgery sapped nine games in 2021, but we’d finally see that freshman-year form come 2022. Davis delivered 1,042 yards on a carry share of nearly 68%. Instead of declaring for the draft last winter, Davis transferred once more to Kentucky. His decision clearly paid off. The 5’8, 208-pounder ran for 1,129 yards and 14 TDs on 5.7 yards per carry. He added 33 catches, 323 yards, and seven more scores. Among 33 RBs with 190+ carries, Davis ranked sixth in yards after contact per attempt and tied for seventh in PFF rushing grade. A bowling ball of a back, Davis’ power and contact balance should translate to the pro game. He also brings a notable pass-catching resume with 94 career catches. The drawback here is Davis’ age; he’ll turn 25 in November. His size should play well in Buffalo, which leaned on James Cook as its 2023 lead back. Bet on Cook maintaining the clear receiving lead while ceding some rushing work to the rookie. QB Josh Allen, of course, cuts into the available short-yardage TDs. This is ultimately a solid landing for Davis vs. pre-draft expectations. He was the eighth RB off the board and finds opportunity with an offense that ran more after switching OCs in 2023. See where Davis settles in our dynasty rookie rankings.

Cook was a fantasy non-factor for most of his rookie season. When given chances, though, he showcased the burst that made him the RB2 in the 2022 draft. That trait truly surfaced in 2023, especially late as Buffalo fired OC Ken Dorsey and elevated QB coach Joe Brady. Only 25 (in September), Cook remains Buffalo's featured back, despite the selection of Ray Davis.
