Jonnu Smith's Preseason Player Analysis

Bottom Line

Smith retained fantasy relevance in 2023, despite bottom-barrel QB play.

Tua Tagovailoa supplies a massive QB upgrade. But his targets are set to dip as he plays alongside Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Current projections have Smith at 54 targets, putting him outside the top-25 TEs. So he’s a fine TE3 target in best ball but not someone to count on in early-season matchups.

What We Learned Last Year

  • Smith split TE duties with Kyle Pitts in Atlanta.
  • Overcoming ugly QB play, Smith tallied 50-582-3 in 17 games.
  • He played under HC Arthur Smith, who coached him in Tennessee.
  • The former Titan finished as a top-10 fantasy TE in five separate weeks.
  • Smith, however, faded down the stretch.
    • He topped 35 yards in only one of his final eight games.
  • Overall, Smith’s underlying profile proved solid.
    • He tied a career high with 14 missed tackles forced.
    • He beat his career averages in yards after catch per reception (7.3), yards per route run (1.55), yards per catch (11.6) and catch rate (72.5%).
  • Atlanta took advantage of his versatility, utilizing him in the slot on 52.8% of his passing snaps.
    • 13.7% of such snaps were spent out wide.

What to Expect in 2024

  • Smith joins a TE depth chart that includes returning starter Durham Smythe.
    • Smythe notched only 35-366-0 in 16 games. He saw a 7.8% target share (43 total).
  • Smith signed a two-year free agent deal with nearly $4 million guaranteed. The 29 year-old projects for lead TE duties.
  • Translating that to reliable fantasy production will be tricky, though.
    • Miami returns Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. That duo accounted for a 50% target share last year.
    • They added Odell Beckham in free agency – and spent two late-round picks on WRs Malik Washington and Tahj Washington.
  • Miami’s 2023 offense wasn’t pass-heavy.
    • They ranked 12th in pass rate over expected; 22nd in raw pass rate.

Tua Tagovailoa QB MIA

Tua Tagovailoa (Hip) Downgraded to Doubtful

Tua Tagovailoa (Hip) Downgraded to Doubtful

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa has been downgraded to Doubtful for Sundays game against the Browns. It is unlikely he will play putting QB Tyler Huntley in line to star

Falcons WR Drake London (groin) is out for Sunday’s game vs. the Vikings. That leaves Atlanta with WRs Van Jefferson, KhaDarel Hodge, Mack Hollins, and Scotty Miller. Seriously. TEs Kyle Pitts and Jonnu Smith should draw more targets with London out. RBs Bijan Robinson and Cordarrelle Patterson could also play expanded roles in the passing game.

Falcons HC Arthur Smith said this week that TE Kyle Pitts is still working back to full health from the PCL injury that ended his 2022 season. "There are no perfect timetables," he told reporters. "But there are certain things ... he's doing really well right now. And there are certain things that he can't. It's been a journey back. He's going to get there." As for when Pitts might get back to full health, Smith could only say that he's "getting close." He did add that Pitts "looked as fast as he did as a rookie" on "some things outside." Does all of this mean that Pitts is approaching a big rebound? Not necessarily. But it's likely playing at least a part in why Pitts' playing time is down a bit vs. last year; and why Jonnu Smith has seen just one fewer target and caught four more passes through four games. Pitts remains stashable in most fantasy formats, though he's also not a must-hold if you need that roster spot for something more helpful. We'll keep watching for signals of some rebound for the not-yet-23-year-old.

Patriots TE Jonnu Smith (concussion) is out for today's game vs. the Bills. That gives TE Hunter Henry the potential to play a big role again. He registered a 100% route rate and 18% target share last week. The issue is the matchup against the Bills, who rank 2nd in both adjusted fantasy points allowed to TEs and Football Outsiders' TE coverage rankings.

Patriots TE Jonnu Smith (ankle) is questionable for Sunday’s game vs. the Browns after a limited week of practice. He’s not a fantasy option, but his return would likely mean fewer pass routes for TE Hunter Henry.
