Bottom Line

Chandler flashed in the seonc half of last season and has garnered praise from his coach. But the Vikings also imported a far more accomplished RB this offseason. Chandler will remain involved but will have a hard time being fantasy-relevant while Aaron Jones is healthy. He’s a decent handcuff-level stash.

What We Learned Last Year

  • HC Kevin O’Connell clearly didn’t like Chandler as much at the beginning of the season as he did by the end.
  • The 2022 fifth-round pick totaled just eight carries and six targets through the first nine games. That doesn’t happen with a RB you’re excited about, especially when your starter is Alexander Mattison. The Vikings also acquired Cam Akers and played him ahead of Chandler during that span.
  • But Akers tore an Achilles’ tendon in Week 9. And then Mattison left Week 10 with a concussion. Chandler led that game with 15 carries but then worked as the RB2 over the next three contests with Mattison back.
  • Then Mattison left Week 14 with an ankle injury. Chandler filled in there, and then broke out with a 23-132-1 rushing line and 3-25 receiving as the Week 15 feature back.
  • Vikings coaches kept Chandler working ahead of Mattison the rest of the way, but he averaged just 10 carries, 42 rushing yards, 1.7 receptions, and 14.7 receiving yards over the final three contests.
  • For the season, Chandler ranked a solid 31st in Pro Football Focus rushing grade among 78 RBs with 40+ carries.
  • He ranked 44th in yards after contact per carry and 56th in elusive rating.

What to Expect in 2024

  • O’Connell has spoken highly of Chandler this offseason, enough to indicate that he’ll have a solid role even with Aaron Jones entering the fold.
  • That’s easier to believe given that Jones has averaged 12.1 carries per game for his career. Jones increased his carries per game each of the past two years but is coming off the most time lost to injury of his career.
    • Jones missed six whole games and parts of several others while dealing with multiple lower-body injuries.
    • He also closed 2023 with five straight games of 18+ carries and more than 100 yards rushing.
  • O’Connell has specifically praised Jones’ ability in the passing game this offseason and stated that Chandler needs further development in that area.
  • That’s significant for a team that ranked seventh in neutral-situation pass rate over the past two years (O’Connell’s stint).

Salvon Ahmed, RB UNS

Salvon Ahmed to IR

The Dolphins placed RB Salvon Ahmed on IR with a foot injury suffered in the Week 11 win over the Raiders. Ahmed is out for at least the next four games, making Week 16 his earliest possible return. He can be dropped from all redraft rosters. With RB De'Von Achane (knee) likely out for at least Friday's game vs. the Jets, Jeff Wilson will be elevated to the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. He'd be a desperation Week 12 fantasy play but is certainly worth stashing on fantasy benches. Wilson is now a Raheem Mostert injury away from a big role.

Dolphins beat writer Barry Jackson writes that RB De’Von Achane’s status for Week 12 “seems highly questionable.” Miami plays on Friday afternoon, which doesn’t give the rookie’s knee much time to heal. “He was feeling better this morning,” HC Mike McDaniel said Monday. “It’s not going to require surgery. We are getting extra feedback and opinions and taking that day by day this week.” McDaniel also shared that Achane’s right knee was injured on Sunday – the same one he sprained in Week 5. We’ll let you know when there’s another update on his status. In the meantime, Raheem Mostert will remain the clear RB1, with Salvon Ahmed as the likely change-of-pace option. Note: Jeff Wilson was a healthy scratch in Week 11.

Dolphins RB De'Von Achane is questionable to return to Sunday's game vs. the Raiders with a knee injury. This is presumably related to the injury that had the rookie sidelined since Week 5. We'll update Achane's status when we know more. His absence leaves Miami with RBs Raheem Mostert and Salvon Ahmed.

Dolphins RB De'Von Achane (knee) is officially active for today’s game vs. the Raiders. The rookie isn’t the safest play in his first action since Week 5, but his upside is huge. Achane finished as a top-5 PPR RB in each of his last three games. And Vegas ranks 23rd in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs. RB Jeff Wilson is a healthy scratch today, leaving Salvon Ahmed as the No. 3 RB behind Achane and Raheem Mostert.

The Dolphins are opening the 21-day practice window for rookie RB De'Von Achane to return from IR. Achane missed the past four games with a knee sprain, but Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald says it "sounds like there's an excellent chance" the rookie plays this week. HC Mike McDaniel reportedly even indicated that Achane could have played through the issue with a brace on the affected knee. But the team decided that didn't fit the player's long-term interests. Achane, of course, has scored fantasy points at a ridiculous rate when on the field so far this year, leading all RBs in PPR points per game on just 11.75 touches per contest. He's likely bound for some regression on that, but should also remain a weekly fantasy starter. His combo of game-breaking speed and an offense designed to exploit that skill makes Achane a high-upside play across matchups. His return challenges RB Raheem Mostert's role a bit but hasn't altered Mostert's touch count to date. Mostert has averaged 13.4 touches across five full games without Achane; 14.0 per game in the three contests in which Achane played a significant role. (The rookie touched the ball only twice in his first game.) RBs Jeff Wilson Jr. and Salvon Ahmed, on the other hand, can be dropped in most redraft formats.
