ESPN reports that the 49ers have granted WR Deebo Samuel permission to seek a trade. It's reportedly the second time in three seasons that Samuel has made such a request. Samuel has one year remaining on his contract, with a $15.8 million cap hit, according to Spotrac. A $15.4 million option bonus that would pay out March 22 appears to set a deadline for a deal to happen.
Samuel, via ESPN's Adam Schefter: "It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle because of the relationship that we have. But I have to do what's best. I'm more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime but now I think it's best that we find another team."
Samuel endured a tough 2024 season that included the lowest receiving success rate and fewest receiving yards per game of his career.
As Jared pointed out our recent podcast, though, Samuel was on track for better production before a midseason bout with pneumonia.
He just turned 29 in January, which keeps him well within the traditionally productive portion of a good WR's career -- according to our aging-curve research.
