We have Garrett Wilson projected for the 10th-most targets in our WR rankings. A key reason for that: The Jets' WR depth chart looks terrible behind him. That factor has apparently given Josh Reynolds a shot to make a real impact in what will be his ninth NFL season but first with New York.
ESPN's Rich Cimini: "After a strong offseason, Reynolds is the clear-cut leader for the WR2 job. ... Beyond Garrett Wilson, the Jets lack big-play ability after cutting Davante Adams. Reynolds has separated from Allen Lazard and others."
Reynolds signed a one-year, $2.75 million contract on March 27. Those are terms and timing (more than two weeks after free agency opened) befitting a 30-year-old with just one season of more than 40 receptions.
Reynolds' high points in targets (81), receptions (52), and receiving yards (618) all came back in 2020 with the Rams. He has exceeded 3 TDs in a season just twice. But Reynolds did post a 40-608-5 receiving line for the 2023 Lions.
That team had new Jets HC Aaron Glenn as defensive coordinator. And new Jets OC Tanner Engstrand served as Detroit's passing-game coordinator.
That Lions team also found no offensive teammate beating Reynolds' 15.2 yards per catch. Not ...
Now, does any of that mean you should get excited about Reynolds this year? Not at all.
The guy ranked 68th among WRs in PPR points per game in that aforementioned 2023 campaign. And his career-high points per game with those 2020 Rams landed Reynolds 87th at the position that year.
Don't expect this veteran to be a factor in any but the deepest of redraft leagues. But there's another format in which he makes sense right now.
This is where Reynolds makes sense, when you don't need to actively start him and can merely benefit the few times he scores a TD.
He sits just 104th among WRs in best ball ADP as of this writing. That's well ahead of Lazard (WR124), but it also puts Reynolds in last-round range -- and means he often goes undrafted.
Especially if you've got QB Justin Fields already rostered, consider using one of those final picks on the downfield guy who has already become the "clear-cut leader" at No. 2 WR for the Jets.
