        Cowboys cut Washington

        11:07am UTC 1/4/23

The Cowboys waived WR James Washington. A broken right foot suffered on August 1 kept Washington out until Week 14. He ended up going catchless on 15 offensive snaps over the last 4 games, quickly getting passed on the depth chart by WR T.Y. Hilton. Dallas will head into the playoff with CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, Noah Brown and Hilton as its top 4 WRs.

        Washington back for Week 14

        12:10pm UTC 12/9/22

Cowboys WR James Washington (foot) is "ready to go" for this weekend's game vs. the Texans, HC Mike McCarthy said Friday. Washington has been out since breaking his right foot in training camp on August 1. He's certainly not a Week 14 fantasy option -- and likely won't be the rest of the season. But we'll keep an eye on his usage.

        Washington to IR

        10:27pm UTC 8/31/22

The Cowboys placed WR James Washington (foot) on IR, knocking him out for at least the first 4 games of the season. With WR Michael Gallup (knee) unlikely to be ready for Week 1, Dallas will roll out CeeDee Lamb, Noah Brown and Jalen Tolbert as its top 3 WRs.

Washington believed to have Jones Fracture

        7:41pm UTC 8/1/22

ESPN's Todd Archer reports that Cowboys WR James Washington broke his right foot in Monday's practice. He'll undergo surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined for 6-10 weeks, per Archer. It sounds like this is a Jones Fracture, which is a fracture of the bone on the pinky toe side of the foot. That's the injury that cost Titans RB Derrick Henry nearly 3 months last year, so 6-10 weeks might be on the optimistic side. Regardless, Washington isn't worth a spot on redraft rosters -- and we wouldn't even bother with him in best ball. With WR Michael Gallup (ACL) also not expected to be ready for the start of the season, rookie WR Jalen Tolbert has a huge opportunity to capture a significant early-season role.

Washington carted off with right leg injury

        3:20pm UTC 8/1/22

Cowboys WR James Washington was carted off the practice field on Monday with an apparent right leg injury. We'll pass along an update when we get one, but it'd probably be wise to hold off on drafting Washington in the meantime. A significant injury would open the door wide open for rookie WR Jalen Tolbert to claim a Week 1 starting job.

        Rookie an immediate starter?

        9:50am UTC 7/13/22

According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Cowboys rookie WR Jalen Tolbert "is expected to start Week 1." Machota said right after the draft that the 3rd-round pick had a chance to compete for a significant role right away. Tolbert worked with the starters in spring workouts, helped by the absences of Michael Gallup and James Washington. Gallup isn't expected to be ready for the opener, coming off his end-of-season ACL tear. Washington has yet to deliver in the NFL and arrived on a small, 1-year contract in free agency. The uncertainty with Gallup and departure of Amari Cooper also leaves room for Tolbert to remain a factor even once Gallup returns. Tolbert presents intriguing upside -- especially in Dak Prescott best-ball lineups -- from a WR68 ADP in Underdog drafting.

        Fehoko benefiting from teammate injuries

        10:35pm UTC 6/2/22

Cowboys WRs Simi Fehoko and T.J. Vasher have gotten a "ton of work" with Dak Prescott this week, thanks to James Washington and Jalen Tolbert being sidelined, according to David Helman of the team website. Helman added that he saw Fehoko "make 2-3 nice snags." It's assumed that Washington and Tolbert will run ahead of Fehoko and Vasher when healthy, but Tolbert was a 3rd-round pick and Washington signed a small 1-year deal. We're betting on Tolbert and Washington being more relevant as well, but neither is guaranteed a starting role. We'll be watching to see how the WR corps sorts out behind CeeDee Lamb.

        Washington in walking boot early

        12:50pm UTC 5/26/22

Cowboys WR James Washington had a walking boot on his left foot at team OTAs Wednesday, according to multiple reports. The team refused to reveal Washington's specific injury, but Pro Football Talk says multiple outlets point to tendinitis. Washington called it "nothing serious, more precautionary" afterward, according to SI.com. The wideout added that he expects to be back soon. With Michael Gallup coming of an ACL tear, we'll be interested to track Washington's status leading up to training camp. There figure to be some early-season targets available in Dallas.

        Tolbert a year 1 contributor?

        9:20pm UTC 4/30/22

Jon Machota of The Athletic believes rookie WR Jalen Tolbert “should be able to immediately compete for a starting spot.” That, of course, would be the WR3 job behind CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup, who’s recovering from a January ACL tear. Consider him questionable for Week 1 right now. As for Tolbert, the words of VP of Player Personnel Will McClay speak volumes about the team’s interest. "Tolbert can play multiple spots,” McClay said. “He’s got size, he’s extremely intelligent and the type of player you want to grow in that room. The upside is there because he’s an NFL style receiver, body style, size, ability to find space to be able to play inside and outside, so that versatility made him very attractive to us.” Tolbert’s main competition will come from former Steeler James Washington, who signed just a 1-year deal worth ~$1.2 million.

        Cowboys add Tolbert

        10:45pm UTC 4/29/22

The Cowboys added South Alabama WR Jalen Tolbert in the 3rd round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Tolbert was just a 2-star recruit out of high school and didn’t win a starting job until his 3rd year at South Alabama. He led that 2019 squad with 6 receiving TDs and ranked 2nd with 521 receiving yards. 2020 brought a true breakout: 64 catches for 1,085 yards and 8 TDs. Tolbert accounted for 40% of South Alabama’s receiving yards and 44% of the TDs that year. He was even more productive as a redshirt senior this past season, posting an 82-1,474-8 line. Only 5 WRs in the country tallied more receiving yards. Tolbert ranked 18th among 251 qualifying WRs in Pro Football Focus’ 2021 receiving grades. The 6’1, 194-pounder is at his best working deep. He has good-not-great speed (4.49-second 40 time) and is an excellent ball tracker with sticky hands. Tolbert is already 23 years old and faced lower-level college competition, though, so the ceiling feels capped. He likely maxes out as a field-stretching #2 or #3 WR as a pro. He’ll compete for the #3 WR job with James Washington in Dallas.

        Cowboys adding Washington

        8:15pm UTC 3/18/22

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that former Steelers WR James Washington is signing a 1-year deal with the Cowboys. Washington averaged just 28.5 receptions across 4 seasons in Pittsburgh. That he apparently couldn't find more on the open market means we shouldn't count on a 2022 breakout. But he lands in an intriguing spot. Dallas has already shed Amari Cooper (trade) and Cedrick Wilson (free agency) this offseason. The Cowboys re-signed Michael Gallup, but we'll see whether his Jan. 2 ACL tear allows him to start the season on time. Washington has been primarily undrafted in early best-ball drafts. As long as he doesn't leap up in ADP, he's an interesting late-round consideration.

        Washington lands on COVID list

The Steelers on Saturday placed WR James Washington on the COVID list. Washington wasn't headed for a big role, with Diontae Johnson back on the active roster. His deactivation, though, locks in Ray-Ray McCloud as a top-3 WR for the upside matchup with Baltimore. Pittsburgh also activated lead CB Joe Haden and C Kendrick Green from the COVID list, making them available for the Ravens game.

The Steelers placed WR Diontae Johnson on the COVID list Thursday, which should knock him out for Sunday's regular-season finale at Baltimore. Johnson's absence leaves Chase Claypool, James Washington and Ray-Ray McCloud as Pittsburgh's top 3 WRs for a high-ceiling matchup with the bad Ravens pass D. All 3 will be worth a look in fantasy football lineups at varying levels.

Steelers WR Chase Claypool is considered "week-to-week" with a toe injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. We'll look for a more concrete timeline for Claypool's return, but we can safely assume that he'll miss Sunday's game vs. the Lions. With WR JuJu Smith-Schuster on IR, we'll likely see James Washington join Diontae Johnson in 2-WR sets, with Ray-Ray McCloud the #3 WR. Johnson should continue to dominate targets. TE Pat Freiermuth could see more volume, too.

But QB Ben Roethlisberger’s struggles leave Claypool as just a WR3 in fantasy lineups. WR James Washington (groin) is out for Week 5.
