Our Thoughts

Diontae Johnson's Preseason Player Analysis

Bottom Line

Johnson made a lateral move being traded to the Panthers, but he became the de facto top WR for the team.

Unfortunately, the Panthers’ offense is not expected to be good enough to support multiple strong PPR WRs, but Johnson could be the stand out.

He is being drafted as a low-end WR3 or high-end WR4, but Johnson could be a WR2 as the primary pass catcher on the Panthers.

What We Learned Last Year

  • On the Steelers last year, Johnson finished with 51 catches for 717 yards and five TDs on 82 targets in 13 games.
  • His per-game averages were generally a slight downgrade from his career averages:
    • 6.69 targets (8.30)
    • 3.92 receptions (5.08)
    • 55.2 yards (56.7)
    • 0.38 TDs (0.32)
  • Johnson ranked as the PPR WR47 in total fantasy points (133.8) and WR40 in points per game (7.2).
  • He missed four games last year (Weeks 2-5) with a right hamstring injury. It was the first time in his career that he had missed consecutive games.
  • He had one top-12 finish. He also had five WR25 or worse finishes.
  • Johnson’s target share (23.4%) was his lowest since 2020.
  • Among 89 WRs with 45+ targets, Johnson ranked 23rd in Pro Football Focus receiving grade and 29th in yards per route run (1.90).
  • Among those same WRs, he was 26th in average targeted air yards (12.5) and 28th in percentage of team air yards (29.82%).

What to Expect in 2024

  • Johnson will play under HC Dave Canales, who will be calling plays for the Panthers offense.
    • Canales was the OC for the Buccaneers last season.
    • Under Canales, the Buccaneers ranked 19th in the NFL with 568 passes.
  • The Panthers are expected to take a step forward this year after only winning two games last season. They are fourth in the NFC South and 31st in the league with a 5.5 win total at most sportsbooks.
  • The Panthers have the worst odds in the NFL to win the Super Bowl at +25000 on most sportsbooks.
  • Johnson enters his sixth season at 28 years old. According to our aging curve research, the average WR with Johnson’s career produces at 96% of his peak value at age-28.

Rashod Bateman WR BAL

Rashod Bateman's Knee Injury Not Long Term

Rashod Bateman's Knee Injury Not Long Term

Ravens HC John Harbaugh said Monday that the knee injury that knocked WR Rashod Bateman out of the Week 13 loss to the Eagles is not long term. It sounds like we'll see Bateman again this season, although it's unclear exactly when that will be. He at least gets a Week 14 bye to heal up. Aready a fringe fantasy asset, Bateman can be dropped in most redraft leagues. His injury should be an opportunity for WR Diontae Johnson to add playing time, but he played zero snaps vs. against the Eagles and has something going on behind the scenes. Harbaugh wouldn't even commit to Johnson still being on the team after the bye week when asked on Monday. Nelson Agholor figures to step in as Baltimore's No. 2 WR if Bateman isn't ready come Week 15 but isn't worth an add outside of very deep fantasy leagues.

Panthers WR Adam Thielen suffered a hamstring injury during the Panthers' win against the Raiders. The team is placing him on injured reserve, meaning Thielen will miss at least the next four games, eligible to return for Week 8's contest against the Denver Broncos.

Steelers WR Diontae Johnson (knee) is not listed on the final Week 15 injury report. He returned to a full practice on Thursday after being sidelined on Wednesday and should be ready for his usual role vs. the Colts on Saturday.

Steelers WR Diontae Johnson was added to the injury report with a knee and did not practice on Wednesday. His availability for Saturday's game vs. the Colts is suddenly in question. We'll look for more details on Johnson's knee issue and see how he's listed on the final injury report tomorrow.

Steelers QB Kenny Pickett will miss an "extended period" with his ankle injury, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac. We'll look for a more detailed diagnosis and timetable for Pickett's return, but it sounds like it'll be QB Mitchell Trubisky under center for the Steelers for the foreseeable future. He's completed 63.8% of his passes at 6.7 yards per attempt over the past two seasons in Pittsburgh. Trubisky will be a bottom-barrel QB2 in fantasy football but probably won't be a significant downgrade from Pickett for the offense.
