Bottom Line

Barkley’s rollercoaster career with the Giants is over. Looking ahead, 2024 easily supplies the best offensive environment of his career.

At 27, Barkley’s on the outskirts of his prime. But if he can hold up physically, there’s little standing in the way of a top-10 fantasy season. He’s in play once you reach Round 2 of fantasy drafts.

What We Learned Last Year

  • Barkley totaled 288 touches, despite missing three games with an ankle sprain.
    • Only seven RBs saw more touches.
    • Barkley also sustained a hyperextended elbow, although it didn’t cost him a game.
  • He lost QB Daniel Jones to an ACL tear in November and ran behind a bottom-three O-line.
    • The Giants' offense ranked 29th in total yards per game; 30th in points.
  • Among 23 RBs with 200+ carries, Barkley ranked 23rd in EPA per rush, 18th in yards per carry, 10th in yards after contact per attempt, 16th in success rate, and 13th in explosive rush rate.
  • As a pass catcher, Barkley set carer lows in yards after catch per reception (6.0) and yards per route run (0.92).
    • He tied a career low with 41 catches.
  • Boosted by four receiving TDs, Barkley ultimately finished as a top-15 fantasy RB eight times.
    • He ranked outside the top-30 five times.

What to Expect in 2024

  • The Eagles moved on from D’Andre Swift after one season.
    • Swift’s absence removes 229 carries and 49 targets (16 games).
    • GM Howie Roseman made a splash by signing Barkley to a three-year deal with $26 million guaranteed. It’s the most guaranteed money given to a RB.
  • Philly returns Kenneth Gainwell and added Round 4 RB Will Shipley.
    • Gainwell’s career-high in touches is only 114.
    • Shipley brings strong college production and difference-making ability on third downs. But for 2024, he’s a major longshot to affect Barkley’s role.
  • The Eagles’ O-line still projects as a top-5 unit, but they’re in a major transition with the retirement of C Jason Kelce.
  • Philly hired former Cowboys and Chargers OC Kellen Moore.
    • As an OC, his units have ranked 6th, 17th, 1st, 4th, and 21st in points; 8th, 15th, 12th, 6th and 24 in rush attempts.
    • Moore was highly complimentary of Barkley this offseason, saying “We’ve got to try to utilize him as much as we can while understanding it’s a long season for running backs.”
  • Barkley doesn't pair well with a clear-cut handcuff. Gainwell will battle Shipley for the No. 2 role.

Saquon Barkley Fine Despite Offensive Struggles

The Eagles stunk on both sides of the ball in a lopsided loss at Tampa Bay on Sunday. That included falling behind 24-0 by the middle of the second quarter. That game flow limited RB Saquon Barkley's opportunities. But Barkley still delivered strong efficiency. He rushed for 84 yards on 10 carries, led by a 59-yard scamper early in the third quarter to set up Jalen Hurts' sneak TD. Barkley added 32 yards on 2 receptions, among 4 targets. His opportunities will benefit from the offense getting healthier on the other side of the Week 5 bye.

Eagles WRs A.J. Brown (hamstring) and DeVonta Smith (concussion) remained sidelined for Thursday's practice. Both guys now look unlikely to play vs. the Bucs this weekend. If that's the case, expect an even more run-heavy offense from Philadelphia with touches funneling to RB Saquon Barkley and TE Dallas Goedert.

Eagles WRs A.J. Brown (hamstring) and DeVonta Smith (concussion) did not practice on Wednesday. Smith is unlikely to clear protocol in time for this weekend's game vs. the Bucs. And Brown looks no better than 50/50 to make it back for that one. If both guys are out, Philadelphia would be down to WRs Jahan Dotson and Johnny Wilson on the active roster. WR Parris Campbell was elevated from the practice squad for last week's game and would likely play again on Sunday. RB Saquon Barkley and TE Dallas Goedert would be the focal points of the offense.

Eagles RB Saquon Barkley had just 17 yards on 5 carries at halftime of Sunday's game against the Saints, which Philly trailed 3-0 at that point. But he used a big second half to finish with 147 yards and 2 TDs on the ground. Barkley delivered a 65-yard TD run to put the Eagles ahead early in the fourth quarter. And then he scored the game's final TD from 4 yards out with 1:01 left. Barkley capped the scoring with a two-point conversion run after that.

Eagles RB Saquon Barkley had a fine night in the loss to the Falcons, carrying 22 times for 95 yards and catching four of five targets. He watched as QB Jalen Hurts vultured a fourth-quarter TD from a yard out -- but then Barkley added a two-point conversion. The RB hurt himself and his team, though, by dropping a third-down pass late in the third quarter. It would have extended Philly's penultimate drive and potentially delivered another shot at a TD. Instead, the Eagles had to settle for a FG and then surrendered Atlanta's game-winning TD drive.

Barkley hit as our 2022 Comeback Pick. 2023 turned up an ugly QB situation and poor efficiency on strong volume. Barkley expressed interest in returning to New York but ultimately joined a superior environment in Philly. Another 1-2 seasons of RB1 production are reasonable.
