NFL Network reports that the Falcons are expected to sign QB Tua Tagovailoa to a league-minimum deal. Any agreement can't officially be made until the Dolphins' release of the veteran processes later this week.
The Falcons have told QB Kirk Cousins that they'll release him at the beginning of the 2026 league year, according to Josh Kendall of The Athletic.
Falcons beat writer Josh Kendall expects Falcons QB Michael Penix to remain the starting QB "in 2026 and beyond." The second-year QB made nine appearances last season before suffering a partial tear of his left ACL.
The Falcons are hiring Kevin Stefanski as their new HC. He's expected to retain DC Jeff Ulbrich and bring Tommy Rees with him from Cleveland to serve as OC, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Stefanski spent the past six seasons as Browns HC, compiling a 45-56 record. He went 37-30 with two playoff appearances over the first four years, the first of two coming with QB Baker Mayfield. Stefanski was in Minnesota for 14 seasons prior to Cleveland, serving as OC in his final year there. That 2019 Vikings team was quarterbacked by Kirk Cousins, who remains signed with the Falcons as of now. QB Michael Penix is also on the roster but is working back from ACL surgery that's expected to sideline him into August. QB is the big question for Atlanta heading into 2026. But Stefanski will be armed with a sturdy offensive line and a pair of high-end skill players in RB Bijan Robinson and WR Drake London.
The Falcons fired HC Raheem Morris, according to multiple reports. Atlanta went 8-9 in each of Morris' two seasons, failing to reach the playoffs either year. OC Zac Robinson will likely be gone, too, although that hasn't been confirmed. The Falcons have elite offensive building blocks in RB Bijan Robinson and WR Drake London, plus an above-average offensive line. The defense flashed at times this season, even though it tailed off over the second half. QB is the big question mark for this team going forward after Michael Penix's season ended with yet another knee injury. We'll see who the Falcons tab to replace Morris and Robinson, but this team certainly has upside in 2026 and beyond.
Update: The Falcons also fired GM Terry Fontenot.
Falcons QB Michael Penix will undergo surgery on his ACL next week, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Penix's recovery is expected to take about nine months, which will push into August. That means Penix will miss all of the offseason program and at least some of training camp. HC Raheem Morris admitted this week that the team will need to address the QB position this offseason. "You definitely have to go out and make some different plans when you talk about the offseason, but we'll talk about that and address that when we get there," Morris said. The Falcons don't have a first-round pick in the 2026 draft after trading it to the Rams to move up for EDGE James Pearce Jr.
The Falcons announced Wednesday that QB Michael Penix Jr. will miss the rest of the season after further evaluation determined that he needs surgery. Penix partially tore his left ACL. That officially puts the offense under Kirk Cousins' control the rest of the way, with Easton Stick the likely backup.
The knee injury that knocked QB Michael Penix Jr. out of Sunday's loss to the Panthers might end his season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Atlanta announced after this initial posting that Penix is headed to IR, meaning he'll miss at least four games. The Falcons already sit 3-7, so it's tough to imagine bringing Penix back in a month making much sense.
The Falcons believe QB Michael Penix Jr. aggravated the bone bruise in his left knee Sunday that cost him a game earlier this season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Falcons QB Michael Penix suffered a knee injury in the third quarter of Sunday's game vs. the Panthers and is questionable to return. We'll update his status when we know more. Penix will be replaced by QB Kirk Cousins.
Falcons QB Michael Penix (knee) is off the final Week 9 injury report and will start Sunday’s game vs. the Patriots. It’s good news for Atlanta’s offense after what we saw from QB Kirk Cousins last week, but Penix is no better than a lower-end QB2 in fantasy lineups.
